What is a Diaphragm Metering Pump?

A metering pump is able to constantly move a precise amount of liquid during a specified time period. The flow rate is very accurate, even when the pressure changes on the outlet side, allowing the pump to be used for a wide variety of applications. These types of pumps are typically used where an additive needs to be gradually released into a system over time, or for creating precise and repeatable solution batches.

Diaphragm metering pumps have a flexible membrane which expands and contracts within the pump chamber. Working in combination with check valves on the inlet and outlet, the diaphragm movement is able to draw and expel fluid. Movement of the diaphragm can be powered through motors, solenoids, pneumatics, or hydraulics. This diaphragm separates the fluid to the pump's mechanical internals and the surroundings, creating a fully sealed environment.

Advantages of diaphragm pumps:

  • The fluid isn't contaminated by leaking lubricant
  • The fluid cannot leak out which may cause mechanical issues or environmental damage
  • Substances in the surroundings, such as air, cannot enter

This makes diaphragm pumps ideal for volatile liquids, hazardous substances, and liquids which cannot be exposed to air.
