What is a Peristaltic Hose Pump?

A peristaltic pump operates by squeezing a point along a length of flexible tube, then moving that point towards the outlet to push the fluid within the tube in that direction. This squeezing action is created by a roller or shoe. When multiple squeeze points are introduced it creates a scenario where the fluid cannot return. These systems are usually in a 'U' shaped configuration with two pressure points attached to a rotor and must be squeezing the tube at all times. The tubing must be flexible enough to withstand the squeezing, while also returning to the original cross section area in order to provide suction for the inlet. In this manner the flow rate is proportional to the speed, and independent to the outlet pressure.

Advantages of peristaltic pumps:

  • The material never leaves the tube, avoiding contamination of the fluid, pump, and environment.
  • Accurate and repeatable flow rates.
  • Slurries, viscous, shear-sensitive and aggressive materials can be pumped without damaging the equipment.
  • No valves or glands to corrode or wear.
  • Self-priming and able to run dry.
  • Simple design, requiring significantly less components to monitor and maintain.
  • Reversible operation.

Peristaltic pumps are used in various environments such as medical (Dialysis and IV delivery systems), laboratory, food and beverage, manufacturing, construction, and waste.

Peristaltic hose pumps differ from peristaltic tube pumps as the compressing action is performed on a highly reinforced hose that is available in larger sizes. This design is capable of higher pressures and better flow rates.

Bredel: World leaders in high-pressure hose pumping

MHS Pumps are the Western Australian distributor for Watson Marlow Bredel products.

Bredel is the world's leading manufacturer of peristaltic pumps with the largest range of pumps and pump element materials.

Today Bredel has more than 100,000 peristaltic pumps working non-stop around the globe. With operating pressures up to 16 bar and flow rates up to 108 000 litres/hour, Bredel hose pumps save time and money by successfully handling the toughest applications in a broad range of industries.

With 100% compression on the hose at all times, the pump does not slip, providing unbeatable metering accuracy and pressure performance. With no pump seals, seats or valves, abrasive slurries are no problem. With the fluid contacting only the inner wall of the hose, the pump is perfect for aggressive chemicals.

Bredel Long-Life Hose Elements

The hose element is critical to ensure pump performance, durability and efficiency. Bredel composite reinforced hoses are constructed from high-quality compounded rubbers reinforced with up to four individual layers of braided nylon, and finished by high-precision machining. Inner and outer layers are extruded and, after construction, machined to ensure critical tolerances are maintained.

Perfect 100% compression eliminates slippage which can destroy shear sensitive product and reduce metering accuracy.

Key features of Bredel hose elements include:

  • Tight tolerances for low stress on bearings
  • Perfect compression for long life
  • Excellent suction performance – 30ft suction lift
  • High pressure capability – up to 16 bar
  • Repeatable volumetric accuracy to ± 1%
  • Consistent capacity independent of varying suction and discharge conditions
  • Exceptional performance when handling high viscosity product
  • Available in Natural Rubber, NBR, Food-Grade NBR, EPDM, CSM (Hypalon), and Bioprene.
